Jeppe Dorff is Head of Transaction Services, Rogers Communications and contributor to our special series: Mobile Payments Check-in with Industry Influencers
Mobile payments are taking off around the world, and in the Canadian market we are seeing it firsthand. 2012 was a big year for mobile payments in Canada. We (Rogers) brought to market suretap, a quick and secure way to make payments using your Rogers smartphone.
We also worked together with CIBC to launch Canada’s first mobile payment application leveraging suretap technology and the secure SIM card inside an NFC-enabled device. And now, we are working with MasterCard Canada to ensure consumers can use their existing MasterCard credit cards on mobile devices to make mobile payments, the same way they do it today – by presenting their credit card (physical or virtual) to a MasterCard PayPass terminal.
2013 will be another significant year for mobile payments in Canada – new devices will be certified and ready for mobile payments and Canadians will increasingly be able to use their smartphone as a mobile wallet.
